In Longting, Xintai, Shandong, villagers in the course of 10 years built a huge stone well (18 meters wide and 28 deep).
The inhabitants invested 6 million RMBs for a total of 100,000 hours of work. The bottom of the pit is covered with moss. This beautiful Well - slowly becoming a sort of tourist attraction - is located in the village of Longting, nestled in the mountains north of Xintai. Originally the area was rich in springs, but in 1960 the springs exhausted. In 1961, the village decided to build a large pit. But the project seemed too complex, and the works stopped for 6 years. In 1967, excavation work began again. The work lasted from 1967 to 1977. Finally, the well was ready just in time for the celebrations of the Chinese New Year. The pit then fell into disuse in 1989 when it was built a modern well.
