For many centuries, people in various countries use masks in different ways.

      The Venitien carnival in France

During carnival, before Lend people wear masks and costumes. The mask is a way for the holder to change his identity and his social position. In this way, a poor can become rich and conversely. This party originally comes from catholic countries. Actually the carnival is a famous party with many influences between a lot of countries as France and Italy. The masks can also hold other functions in others countries.

      The Sartiglia mask festival

This festival is an old local custom from Italy. It consists in sticking a sword or a rapier in a hanging-star-shape ring while the knight is at gallop, by knights wearing masks. The chief of the race and the procession is named “ Su Componidori”. He wears his own clothes. Each star which has been stucked by a sword is a presage for a rich harvest.

      Chinese Lahu and Dongba masks

The Dance of the Shaman, which was performed in ancient China, had a similar goal as the Sartiglia festival. This dance, which used masks as its fundamental part, was practiced in order to exorcise demons.

The Lahu and Dongba masks that are exposed in this exhibition are not typical masks of these ethnics. The artists use his own creativity to make the masks, but include some ethnical symbols.
